37 personalized ideas for your wife or girlfriend, plus every anniversary year that carries a gift on the list, 1st to 60th, traditional and modern.

The anniversary gift she remembers is never the most expensive one.
It is the one that proves you were paying attention. The night you met, mapped in stars. Your song, glowing on the nightstand. A blanket with the date you married stitched into the corner. Personalization is what turns a nice gift into the one she keeps.
This guide works two ways. The table below gives you every anniversary year that carries a gift on the list, one through twenty-five and then every fifth year to sixty, with the traditional US and UK lists, the modern list, the gemstone and the flower side by side, plus an honest verdict on whether that year's material is actually worth following. Underneath it are 37 gifts we sell, ranked inside each section by how many people have actually bought them. Everything is personalized free and ships in 1-2 days.
What is the best anniversary gift for your wife? The best anniversary gift for her is a personalized keepsake tied to your own story rather than to the year: an engraved necklace, a star map of the night you met, a custom song plaque, or a throw blanket carrying your wedding date. Matching the traditional material for your year is a nice touch when the material cooperates, and years like iron, steel and silver plate are better ignored. The table below says which is which.
Every anniversary year that carries a gift on the list, one through twenty-five and then every fifth year to sixty, with the four lists side by side and an honest verdict on each material. Scroll sideways on a phone.
| Year | Traditional (US) | Traditional (UK) | Modern | Gemstone | Flower | Our verdict | Shop |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | Paper | Cotton or paper | Clocks | Gold | Carnation | Easy Paper is the best brief on the list. Anything printed, written or photographic counts. | Shop 1st year › |
| 2nd | Cotton | Paper or cotton | China | Garnet | Cosmos | Easy Cotton means anything woven. A blanket or a sweatshirt lands it without trying. | Shop 2nd year › |
| 3rd | Leather | Leather | Crystal or glass | Pearl | Sunflower | Easy Leather takes engraving beautifully, which is why year three is the easiest to personalize. | Shop 3rd year › |
| 4th | Fruit and flowers | Linen, silk | Appliances | Blue topaz | Geranium | Awkward Fruit and flowers do not last, and an appliance is not a love letter. This is a year to skip the theme. | Shop 4th year › |
| 5th | Wood | Wood | Silverware | Sapphire | Daisy | Easy Wood means roots and endurance, and it engraves. The strongest theme year on the whole list. | Shop 5th year › |
| 6th | Iron | Sugar | Wood | Amethyst | Calla lily | Hard Iron is a hard brief for a gift for her. Borrow the modern list and give wood, or give something with the date cut into metal so the theme is honored without the skillet. | Shop 6th year › |
| 7th | Wool, copper | Wool | Desk sets | Yellow sapphire | Freesia | Easy Wool is warmth and comfort, and a personalized throw is the whole year in one gift. | Shop 7th year › |
| 8th | Bronze | Bronze, salt | Linen, lace | Tourmaline | Clematis | Hard Bronze is difficult to make romantic. Linen and lace from the modern list is the better route, or a bronze-toned engraved piece. | Shop 8th year › |
| 9th | Pottery | Copper | Leather | Morganite | Poppy | Awkward Pottery is charming and impersonal at the same time. Personalize it or move to the modern list. | Shop 9th year › |
| 10th | Tin, aluminum | Tin | Diamond jewelry | Diamond | Daffodil | Awkward Tin reads as cheap and diamond reads as expensive. Most people split the difference with a keepsake that carries the date. | Shop 10th year › |
| 11th | Steel | not on the UK list | Fashion jewelry | Turquoise | Morning glory | Hard Steel is the least romantic word on the list. Take the modern list and give jewelry, or use steel as a finish rather than the gift. | Shop 11th year › |
| 12th | Silk | Silk and fine linen | Pearls | Alexandrite | Peony | Easy Silk is one of the few materials that is already a gift. Anything soft works. | Shop 12th year › |
| 13th | Lace | not on the UK list | Textiles, furs | Citrine | Chrysanthemum | Awkward Lace is narrow. Textiles from the modern list opens it up to blankets and robes. | Shop 13th year › |
| 14th | Ivory | not on the UK list | Gold jewelry | Opal | Dahlia | Skip it Do not buy ivory. The trade is banned or restricted almost everywhere and the material should stay off the list. Ivory-colored works, and gold jewelry from the modern list is the honest answer. | Shop 14th year › |
| 15th | Crystal | Crystal | Watches | Ruby | Rose | Easy Crystal is glassware, and glassware engraves. The last consecutive year the authoritative list covers. | Shop 15th year › |
| 16th | Wax, or silverware | disputed | Silver holloware | Peridot | Statice | Disputed Year 16 is not on the reference list at all. Sources split between wax and silverware. | Shop 16th year › |
| 17th | Furniture | disputed | Furniture | Carnelian (disputed) | Red carnation | Disputed Not on the reference list. Furniture is the common answer and it is a retail invention. | Shop 17th year › |
| 18th | Porcelain | disputed | Porcelain | Cat's eye | none published | Disputed Not on the reference list. | Shop 18th year › |
| 19th | Bronze | disputed | Bronze | Aquamarine | Bronze chrysanthemum | Disputed Not on the reference list, and bronze again after year eight. | Shop 19th year › |
| 20th | China | China | Platinum | Emerald | Aster | Easy China means the good dishes, and a serving piece with your names on it earns a place on the table. | Shop 20th year › |
| 21st | Brass or nickel | disputed | Brass or nickel | Iolite | none published | Disputed Not on the reference list. | Shop 21st year › |
| 22nd | Copper | disputed | Copper | Spinel | none published | Disputed Not on the reference list. | Shop 22nd year › |
| 23rd | Silver plate | disputed | Silver plate | Imperial topaz | none published | Disputed Not on the reference list, and silver plate is a strange thing to give. Treat year 23 as a free year. | Shop 23rd year › |
| 24th | Opal | disputed | Musical instruments | Tanzanite | none published | Disputed Not on the reference list. | Shop 24th year › |
| 25th | Silver | Silver | Sterling silver | Silver | Iris | Easy Both lists agree, as they do at most milestone years. Silver, engraved, and you are done. | Shop 25th year › |
| 30th | Pearl | Pearl | Diamond | Pearl | Lily | Easy Pearl for thirty years is the easiest milestone on the list. | Shop 30th year › |
| 35th | Coral | Coral | Jade | Emerald or jade | Coral rose | Skip it Live coral should never be bought, for the same reason as ivory. Coral as a color, or jade from the modern list, is the responsible read. | Shop 35th year › |
| 40th | Ruby | Ruby | Ruby | Ruby | Gladiolus | Easy All four lists say ruby. Red is the shortcut if the stone is out of budget. | Shop 40th year › |
| 45th | Sapphire | Sapphire | Sapphire | Sapphire | Blue iris | Easy Sapphire across the board, and blue is the easy stand-in. | Shop 45th year › |
| 50th | Gold | Gold | Gold | Gold | Yellow rose with violets | Easy Fifty years is gold on every list ever published. Gold-toned engraving carries it at any budget. | Shop 50th year › |
| 55th | Emerald | Emerald | Emerald | Alexandrite or emerald (disputed) | Calla lily | Easy Emerald, or simply green, and the sources split on the stone. | Shop 55th year › |
| 60th | Diamond | Diamond | Diamond | Diamond | Orchid | Easy Sixty years is the diamond jubilee. Nothing else is expected. | Shop 60th year › |
Traditional list compiled by the Chicago Public Library from The World Almanac and World Book Encyclopedia, reproduced on Wikipedia. Modern list published by the American National Retail Jeweler Association in 1937, reproduced by Emily Post. Gemstones per the International Gem Society. Flowers per 1-800-Flowers. Two gemstones are marked disputed because the sources do not agree on them: year 17, where one list gives a watch rather than a stone, and year 55.
The authoritative traditional list stops at year fifteen. After that it only covers every fifth year. The reference compilation held by the Chicago Public Library has no entry at all for years sixteen to nineteen or twenty-one to twenty-four, and neither does Emily Post, which jumps straight from ten to fifteen. Every value you see published for those years is a twentieth-century retail invention, and the sources genuinely disagree with each other. We have marked those years Disputed in the table rather than pretending otherwise.
The flower list is much shorter than it looks. The list most sources trace back covers years one to five, then ten, fifteen, twenty, twenty-five, thirty, forty and fifty. Emily Post adds six through nine plus a few later milestones. Any other year's flower is a florist's suggestion rather than a tradition.
No one governs the color list. You will find anniversary color charts everywhere and there is no publishing body behind any of them. We have left color out of the table for that reason.
Year fourteen is ivory, and you should not buy ivory. The trade is banned or tightly restricted across most of the world and the material should have left the list decades ago. Ivory as a color is fine. Gold jewelry, which is the modern entry for year fourteen, is the better answer.
Year thirty-five is coral, with the same problem. Living coral reefs are not a gift. Coral as a color, or jade from the modern list, is the responsible read.
Nobody says this out loud, so we will. Some years hand you a wonderful material and some hand you a metal you would never buy anyone. Year six is iron. Year eleven is steel. Year twenty-three is silver plate. Presenting those with the same enthusiasm as gold is how gift guides lose your trust.
There are only three honest moves when the material fights you, and they work for every difficult year on the list.
Nothing carries a memory quite like something she can wear. A name, a date or a set of coordinates turns a simple piece into the one she reaches for without thinking.

Personalize it ›Three small touches that turn a lovely gift into the one she tears up over.
Your anniversary or the day you met, engraved somewhere on the gift, quietly says you remember exactly when it all started.
A few honest lines about the year you just spent together is the part she will read again next year.
Give it over a slow dinner or a quiet morning, not on the way out the door. The setting is half the gift.
Years one to fifteen run paper, cotton, leather, fruit and flowers, wood, iron, wool and copper, bronze, pottery, tin, steel, silk, lace, ivory and crystal. After fifteen the authoritative list only covers every fifth year: china at twenty, silver at twenty-five, pearl at thirty, coral at thirty-five, ruby at forty, sapphire at forty-five, gold at fifty, emerald at fifty-five and diamond at sixty. The full table above shows all of them next to the modern, gemstone and flower lists.
Follow the material only when it helps. Paper, cotton, leather, wood, wool, silk and crystal all make good gifts on their own. Iron, steel, bronze and silver plate do not, and for those years most people either use the modern list or ignore the theme and give something personalized. A gift with her name and your date on it works for every year, which is why it is the safe answer when the material fights you.
Silver. Twenty-five is one of the rare years where the traditional list, the modern list and the gemstone list all agree, so silver or anything silver-toned is correct. The flower is the iris.
The modern list was published by the American National Retail Jeweler Association in 1937, when several of the Victorian traditional materials had stopped making practical sense. It runs clocks, china, crystal, appliances, silverware, wood, desk sets, linen and lace, leather, and diamond jewelry for the first ten years. The two lists diverge most in the years where the traditional material is hardest to shop for, which is not a coincidence.
No. The list is a Victorian custom that a jewelers' trade association extended in 1937, and it has no authority beyond being a useful prompt. Plenty of couples use it as a starting point and abandon it the moment it produces something like steel. If the material is not helping, skip it.
Silver, since it is the traditional, modern and gemstone answer for twenty-five years all at once. For other years the gemstone list gives you gold at one, garnet at two, pearl at three, sapphire at five, diamond at ten, ruby at fifteen, emerald at twenty and pearl again at thirty.
Mostly, but not entirely. They differ at years one, two, four, six, seven, eight, nine and twelve, and again at the far end where the UK list names sixty-five and seventy. The clearest example is year six, which is iron in the US and sugar in the UK. Both columns are in the table above.
At twenty-five years and beyond the materials get expensive fast, and the gifts that actually land tend to be the ones that reference the length of the marriage rather than the material for it. A piece carrying the wedding date, the number of years, or a map of where it started tends to mean more at forty years than at four.
There is no rule, and the traditional list is not a budget guide. The milestone years, meaning five, ten, twenty-five and fifty, are where most people spend more. For the years in between, a thoughtful personalized gift under a hundred dollars is completely normal and usually better received than something expensive and generic.
The same list works, minus the wedding-date framing. Use the date you started dating, the place you met, or the song from that night. Anything on this page that takes a date or a location takes those just as well.
Pick something that personalizes with a name, a date or a photo, and check the ship time before you buy. Everything on this page is personalized free and ships in 1-2 days, which covers most last-minute situations.
Then use a gift that works for all of them. Anything carrying her name, your wedding date or the place you met sidesteps the list entirely, which is the honest reason personalized gifts have become the default answer for anniversaries.
If you already know the shape of the gift rather than the year, start here.
Every piece is personalized free and ships in 1-2 days.
If you already know the year, these go deeper than the table does.
